Open Development presented its research on local government contracting with the private sector for health services in the Philippines at the 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Nagasaki, Japan. The conference focused on building just and sustainable health systems, with key discussions on private sector contracting, governance, and climate resilience. It highlighted the importance of collaboration and evidence-based strategies for inclusive and equitable health systems.

In the health sector, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in delivering services to hard-to-reach communities. They also espouse person-centered approaches that provide support and integrated care close to where people live and work. Many governments have a long history of working with NGOs to provide these services and address other social sector issues.

Committed to achieving universal health coverage by 2030, the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) is strengthening the health system by revising its essential health services package (EHSP), the set of health services deemed essential to meeting the population’s core health needs). To revise the EHSP, the MoHSS needs to determine how many and what types of health care workers (HCWs) are needed to provide these essential health services.
